GVSU works to build partnerships for student success through academic advising

The Fall Academic Advising Forum, held October 26 in the Kirkhof Center, was designed to build partnerships among faculty members and advising staff members to further student success.

"Grand Valley has always had a commitment to student success and that is why we are here," said Provost Gayle R. Davis. "Academic advising is so important to our students today because they are facing a very different future in the current economic environment. We want to help them find the best choices to overcome these obstacles in their careers."

Speakers gave academic advising updates, and highlighted the Academic Advising Handbook, Advisor Development Handbook, and the upcoming Majors Fair. The event was sponsored by Advising Resources and Special Programs; about 40 people participated.

Collaborative partnerships were also discussed by representatives from the Housing Liaison Program, faculty advising, MAP-Works, and Career Services. Sherril Soman, interim assistant vice president for Academic Affairs, said these partnerships are valuable to students.

"We want to make sure that we have the resources for students, faculty, and staff to get the information they need about academic advising in an effort to help further our students' success," Soman said.

A roundtable discussion concluded the forum, allowing faculty and staff members to discuss and collaborate on partnership topics.
