A movement science professor will give a lecture as though it is the last one he will ever give.

Brian Riemersma will present at Student Senate’s annual Last Lecture event on Thursday, November 29, at 7:15 p.m. in room 102 of the Loutit Lecture Halls.

The event, held at universities across the nation, is inspired by a speech delivered in 2007 by cancer-stricken Carnegie Mellon University professor Randy Pausch titled, “The Last Lecture.” It focused on celebrating the life he had always dreamed of instead of concentrating on death. He died at age 47, almost a year after giving the speech.

Kathleen Carlson, vice president of Educational Affairs for the Student Senate, said students nominate speakers for the annual event. This year, the Educational Affairs Committee chose Riemersma after narrowing down the nominees to five faculty members.

“Professors provide a brief summary on what they might speak about and Professor Riemersma immediately stood out,” said Carlson. “He was honored and excited to have the opportunity.”

The event is free and approved for LIB 100 and 201 classes. Subway sandwiches and refreshments will be provided.
