Robert Appleson, GVSU's liaison with the North Central Association, will visit Grand Valley on October 5. A campus-wide forum with Appleson will take place from 1-3 p.m. in the Kirkhof Center's Grand River Room. In addition, Appleson will meet with President Thomas J. Haas, Provost Gayle R. Davis, and other university leaders to discuss the process.
Throughout his career, Haas has been involved in accreditation processes on both sides -- as a team member preparing for a site visit, and as an evaluator of institutions. Haas said re-accreditation is "very important as we seek to improve our quality and as we seek external validation that we're doing what we say we do. It provides a good snapshot of the institution at regular intervals throughout its history."
Many hold the misconception that accreditation is solely an academic endeavor. But it's a university-wide process, and it's important that all of Grand Valley's constituencies get involved, said Julia Guevara, accreditation and assessment officer.
"This is some of the most important work we do at this university, " Guevara said.
