More than 40 physical therapy students, along with faculty and staff members, volunteered at organizations throughout West Michigan as part of Global PT Day of Service, established by the American Physical Therapy Association.

On September 29, students worked at various sites, including Habitat for Humanity, Kids’ Food Basket, Knapp Charter School, and The Humane Society, among others.

Dan Vaughn, program chair and professor of physical therapy, said this is the first year students have participated.

"Making a difference in the lives of patients and clients is what the profession of physical therapy is all about," said Vaughn. "Participating in PT Global Day of Service provides students with an opportunity to give back to the communities in which they live, and to show our appreciation to the many volunteers and employees who make these community service agencies work in west Michigan."

In addition, on October 10, students spent their lunch hour decorating hundreds of paper food bags for Kids' Food Basket of Grand Rapids. The organization serves nearly 7,500 kids in greater Grand Rapids, Muskegon and Holland. Sack suppers include a well-balanced meal that is distributed to students at school and then taken home.
