More than 1,100 Grand Valley State University students participated in commencement December 9 at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids.

Students heard an address from Gayle R. Davis, who received an honorary degree. Davis served as Grand Valley's provost and executive vice president for Academic and Student Affairs from 2002 until her retirement in June. During that time, Davis successfully aligned academic operations, programs and budgets as the university grew in size, complexity and reputation.

During the ceremony, the Alumni Association presented the Young Alumni Award to Carolyn Ulstad, program assistant at Macatawa Area Coordinating Council. She graduated in 2011 with a bachelor's degree in geography and planning and a minor in environmental science. In her role in MACC's Transportation Planning Department, she collaborates with area road commissions to rate road quality and collaborate to support the Macatawa Watershed Project.
