President Philomena V. Mantella joined President Emeritus Thomas J. Haas July 17 at the Downtown Market in Grand Rapids to taste test a new sandwich named for Haas.

The "Haas Boss" was created by Slows Bar BQ to honor Haas for his 13 years of service to Grand Valley State; Haas retired in June.

The winning sandwich, the Haas Brisket, has brisket, bacon aioli, coleslaw and pickled onions. Haas and his wife, Marcia, also taste-tested a pork sandwich and a hamburger. Their 9-year-old granddaughter, Maddie, helped make the final decision.

Mantella's 91-year-old mother, Lucille, also tried the Haas Brisket and toured the Downtown Market.

For every sandwich ordered, Slows will donate 10 percent of the proceeds to the Tom and Marcia Power of Ten Endowed Scholarship Fund. Students receive a 10 percent discount at Slows when they show their GVSU ID.
