Graduate Student Awarded Engineering Fellowship to Support Women in STEM

The School of Engineering is pleased to announce the second recipient of the Wisner Engineering Fellowship, Sofia Fanourakis. The first Wisner Fellow, graduate student Robert Esser, is successfully completing his fellowship in December.  He has worked with one local company to significantly improve the existing design of a critical automobile component.

Sofia will be the Wisner Fellow for the 2016 calendar year. As part of this award, she will be engaged with another company to improve their product/process and complete a half-time Graduate Assistantship for the School of Engineering. Sofia is also a student in the articulated Bachelor/Master of Science in Engineering program.

The Thomas and Joyce Wisner Engineering Fellowship is extension of the family’s legacy and affection for the engineering profession. The fellowship was established in conjunction with scholarships to assist first generation and nontraditional engineering students, as well as to support new product development within the Michigan economy.

At the end of their experience, the Wisner Engineering Fellows will present their research and/or product. Recipients of the award are selected by the Padnos College of Engineering and Computer faculty and administration.

The Master of Science in Engineering at GVSU is a design oriented program and is closely integrated with the local West Michigan businesses. Classes are taught in outstanding state-of-the-art facilities with emphasis areas in biomedical engineering, electrical and computer engineering, manufacturing operations, mechanical engineering, and product design and manufacturing engineering.
