Public Health Alumna Ready to Make a Laker Effect

Kassie Nguyen graduated from the Master of Public Health program in April 2023, and is ready to make her Laker Effect.

During her program, Kassie was with Detroit Health Department (DHD) for the practicum experience. She then went on to collaborate with the organization for her culminating project. This was the first epidemiological report for the organization's iDecide Clinic, which is funded through Title X. The clinic provides patients with sexual and reproductive health services that are affordable, teen-friendly, and gender-inclusive. For the culminating project, Kassie aided in evaluating frequencies of different forms of birth control uptake throughout Detroit. This information informs the Council Districts when exploring future outreach and intervention opportunities. DHD hopes to continue with additional in-depth research on this topic.

Kassie was also an exemplary staff member in The Graduate School. She was responsible for recording and updating The Graduate School Podcast Series and updating the Graduate Writing Resources page. She also wrote the monthly Grad News: Headlines from Across the Nation newsletter and assisted with other research-based projects. You may have also seen her supporting the management of events such as the Graduate School Citations for Academic Excellence, the Graduate Showcase, and the 3-Minute Thesis Competition.

Currently, Kassie is a patient services representative at Corewell Health. In the future, she plans to contribute to the field of public health as an epidemiologist, specifically on infectious diseases.

The Graduate School is glad to have been a part of Kassie's journey at Grand Valley State University. Congratulations to Kassie for her incredible work and achievements. We look forward to more of your Laker Effects!
