Baxter Community Center

Mission of the Baxter Community Center

Baxter Community Center seeks to reveal God’s love by responding to human needs in its community through effective programs and partnerships. Baxter’s response primarily includes addressing immediate needs, assisting individuals to become responsible, productive and self-sufficient, and affirming the positive qualities in individuals and the community.

Role of the Baxter Community Center in the Weed & Seed Program

Baxter Community Center, in the heart of the Central City, is one of three current Safe Haven Sites and was designated as our first official site in 2005.  Services provided through the Baxter Community Center to the Central City youth include tutoring, mentoring, exercise programs, and reading clubs.  Specific programs at Baxter Community Center include: Marketplace - which provides emergency food and clothing resources, tax preparation and financial literacy classes; Child Development Center for infants through children age 12; Wholistic Health Clinic, providing quality primary health care including adult, pediatric, dental and eye clinics; Mizizi Maji Mentoring, which matches 30 students age 10-17 with adult mentors who offer a stable, supporting relationship; and the Recreation Reaps Rewards Program, an after school program funded by the Grand Rapids Parks and Recreation Department.

The Community Police Officer for the Baxter neighborhood is Officer Aaron Stevens.  He can be contacted by phone at (616) 520-3470 or by email at astevens@grcity.us
