Greek Week: Greeks Give Back
Date: March 29, 2010
During the week of March 22-26, the Grand Valley State University Fraternity and Sorority community game together in spirit of friendly competition as they displayed of their shared values.
The theme for Greek Week 2010 was "Real World: Allendale"; all of the events and team names were based off of past and present reality TV shows. All twenty four of GVSU's fraternities and sororities took place in this years Greek Week, and competed for the coveted bragging rights bestowed upon the Greek Week Champion.
The week was filled with events including: Greekest Link (trivia), Little Change, Big Money (fundraiser), Extreme Makeover; Bag Edition (lunch bag decorating), Dancing with the Greeks (campus-wide lip-sync), and Making the Canned (canned food drive).
As Greeks place an emphasis on service and philanthropy during Greek Week, this years community partner was the Kid's Food Basket of Grand Rapids; which makes sure kids in low income areas do not go home without food for an evening meal.
In the Little Change, Big Money event, formally known as Penny Wars,a total of $990.55 was raised for the Kid's Food Basket of Grand Rapids. This money will be used to buy crackers to put in the lunch bags that were decorated in Extreme Makeover Bag Edition. Over 3,000 bags were decorated by the participating teams, with team "Keeping Up with the Delta Phi's" (Delta Upsilon and Phi Sigma Sigma) leading the way by decorating over 1,000 bags.
Keeping with the philanthropic style of Grand Valley Greek Life, Making the Canned collected cans and other non-perishable items for the GVSU food pantry organized through the Women's Center. In a matter of a few hours, the GVSU fraternity and sorority community was able to deliver hundreds of pounds of non-perishable items.
Out of the 10 events throughout the week, the 2010 Greek Week Champions were team "Viva La Greeks" (Alpha Sigma Phi and Delta Zeta). Congratulations to all of those who participated and helped to make Greek Week 2010 a great success.
