Sigma Lambda Gamma is a national sorority founded April 9^th, 1990 at the University of Iowa. We are a Latina-based sorority with Multicultural membership and we have grown to be a widely respected sorority, founded on five principles: Academics, Community Service, Cultural Awareness, Morals & Ethics, and Social Interaction. Our national philanthropies consist of the TRIO programs and Breast Cancer Awareness. Nationally, we stress the importance of morals, ethics, and education as part of our daily lives. We dedicate ourselves in the empowerment of Latina women and women of all cultures. The nationalities in our sisterhood reflect over 109 countries of origin. We strive in educating the community about the many cultures we live with and on the importance in knowing about these different cultures. The Omicron Alpha chapter was founded on February 20, 1999, through the hard work and dedication of our 12 founding sisters. Our founding sisters believed that Grand Valley was missing an organization that supported Latina women academically, personally, and socially. They did their research on different sororities and found that Sigma Lambda Gamma best encompassed their beliefs. After much hard work, perseverance, and dedication, a chapter was established at Grand Valley State University. Since its founding, the Omicron Alpha chapter has continued to grow and has greatly impacted the campus community.

The Omicron Alpha has shown its commitment to Grand Valley 's campus and the outside community through our yearly participation in educational and social events. We participate in and sponsor many community service projects and our chapter continually sponsors events based around Sigma Lambda Gamma's five founding principles. The Omicron Alpha chapter has continued to carry on our chapter’s founders as well as our founding mother’s visions through providing a source of strength and unity amongst women on our campus and our community.

The sisters at the Omicron Alpha chapter, through the membership intake process, are educated on becoming women of distinction. We believe that through hard work and dedication any goal can be met. We stand close to our beliefs on morals and ethics and we strive to educate others on issues important to us. We learn to be leaders and take leadership roles within the chapter and the campus community as a whole. We, as sisters of our chapter, form close bonds with each other, becoming our family away from home. We are a support system for each other and we believe in keeping these bonds forever.
