Graduate Students

A message from Jeffrey A. Potteiger, Ph.D., Dean of Graduate Studies:

The education of graduate students and their personal and professional development is an important aspect of our mission at Grand Valley State University.  In order to fulfill our responsibilities to the people of Michigan as well as the nation and world we continually strive to give our students the best educational experience possible.  We offer rigorous masters and doctoral programs taught by highly qualified faculty who are actively engaged with students.  Furthermore, because we know that learning occurs in many different venues, we strive to provide our students with the best opportunities to engage with other learners in diverse environments including but not limited to the classroom, the laboratory, the clinic, and the professional community.

GVSU’s excellent graduate programs are grounded in academically rigorous plans of study and supported by a university that adheres to policies and procedures that guide the academic process yet provide the flexibility to addresses unique issues and individual learning experiences.  Our graduate programs are designed to prepare students to address real-world issues with real world solutions.  For this fast changing global world we provide students with the skills necessary to lead a productive and fulfilling life both now, as well as in the future.  These skills include the basic principles grounded in a liberal education and the technical skills needed for lifelong personal and professional development.

Grand Valley State University delivers graduate programs in downtown Grand Rapids and at regional centers in Holland, Muskegon, and Traverse City.  As the only residential university campus in downtown Grand Rapids, Grand Valley State University provides classrooms, laboratories, on-site faculty and student services staff, a full service bookstore, food court, and a modern, technologically advanced library.  These full-service facilities are conducive to and supportive of a quality learning experience.

The Office of Graduate Studies functions as the central administrator for graduate-related policies and procedures for students, faculty, and staff involved in graduate education. Please take a moment to view our website (www.gvsu.edu/gs/) for information on the specific policies and programs supported by our Office.  If you have any questions or comments please contact us at gradstudies@gvsu.edu.  We value your input as we strive to make your graduate education experience the best possible.
