Alumnus Ray Bennett believes that a leader is someone who is not afraid to step out and take a chance; someone who does not fear failure; someone who is a great example for which others can follow.
With his University Society level giving to Grand Valley, Bennett truly exemplifies this definition.
"I know that there are students out there that can make an impact on the world, but unfortunately, do not have the finances to attend college," he said. "It is our responsibility as alumni to make that difference."
This statement is not far from Bennett's own experience.
"As a kid growing up in the inner city of Detroit, I did not have all the resources to go to college," he said. "My life has been changed because scholarships were available. My experience at Grand Valley is definitely one that is shaping the rest of my life."
Bennett, who now holds the title of Area Vice President of Operations for Marriot's Midwest Lodging Development division, believes that this foundation has helped his professional career tremendously.
"In my short career, I have worked for two Fortune 500 companies and my Grand Valley education was essential in making this happen," he said. "Together, GVSU alumni can assist in affording students this same opportunity by giving back."
