Program information

Our program has four major area of study.

City and Regional Planning

  • Emphasis area in the major.
  • City and Regional Planning minor.
  • Certificate in Sustainable Planning.
  • A two-course introductory sequence.
  • Dedicated courses in planning subfields: transportation, environmental, and planning law.
  • Three courses focused on the use of GIS for urban and regional analysis.

Environmental Geography

  • Emphasis area in the major.
  • Environmental Studies minor.
  • Focus on landscape analysis, world forests, global climate change, conservation, land use, the impact of development on the environment.

Geographic Techniques (Geographic information systems (GIS), remote sensing, cartography, land survey, global satellite systems, and spatial statistics).

  • Emphasis area in the major.
  • Geographic Techniques minor.
  • GIS Certificate.
  • The department offers a 3 course sequence in GIS, two courses in Remote Sensing, and two courses on GIS applications in business and economics.

Regional Geography

  • Our area specialists have spent years in the field, have conducted research in their regions and speak at least one language from their region of expertise.
  • The department offers a general course on world regional geography and dedicated courses on Africa, Asia, Europe, Middle and South America, the Middle East, North America, Russia and the states of the CIS.
