Internships in Geography and Planning

An internship is experiential learning and takes place outside the classroom and off the GVSU campus. An internship will give you the opportunity to work in business, government, or for a private agency and gain valuable experience and a taste of the working world in an area of interest to you. Most interns work in areas where they would like to be employed after graduation and often an internship will lead directly to a job. Students in the City and Regional Planning emphasis are required to take an internship but all others are strongly encouraged to do so as well. Unlike many other areas of study, internships in Geography and Planning are generally paid.

The internship must be planned the semester before it is to take place. As an intern, you will be directed by a field supervisor who will work with a Geography and Planning faculty member. Generally, students make their own internship arrangements and expectations are put in writing. To receive credit for your internship you must register for GPY490. Credit may be from 3-9 but normally students enroll for 3 credits. GPY490 is graded on a credit/no credit basis. See your advisor for more details.
