The Family Owned Business Institute is dedicated to providing and facilitating quality academic research. The purpose of the Research Scholar Program is to encourage faculty and doctoral candidates to conduct high quality research with an emphasis on family business dimensions. Research is the key to uncovering the truth underlying these discussions. The FOBI Scholars further facilitate this rigorous inquiry. Since the inception of the Research Scholar Program, FOBI has sponsored more than sixty scholars. In 2003, the Research Scholar Program expanded and began accepting international applications. As a result, FOBI is pleased to have received high quality applications worldwide. The Research Scholar Program is a competitive program that provides $20,000 in research awards annually.

Dianne H.B. Welsh: University of North Carolina Dr. Dianne H.B. Welsh is the Hayes Distinguished Professor of Entrepreneurship at the Bryan School of Business and Economics and the Founder and Executive Director of the North Carolina Entrepreneurship Center at The University of North Carolina Greensboro. Dr. Welsh serves as the Vice President of Programs for the Small Business Institute and Program Chair-Elect for the Technology and Innovation Division of the Academy of Management. She was appointed by Governor Purdue in January 2010 to the first North Carolina Innovation Council. Dianne created the Bachelor of Science degree in Entrepreneurship, two minors, a graduate certificate in Entrepreneurship, and spearheaded the development of 38 cross-disciplinary Entrepreneurship courses for the University of North Carolina in 20 departments. She won the Global Consortium of Entrepreneurship Centers Exceptional Activities in Entrepreneurship across Disciplines Award in 2010 and the Small Business Institute Best Practices Award in 2011. Kirby Rosplock: GenSpring Family Offices Dr. Kirby Rosplock, Ph.d. is Director of Research & Development at GenSpring Family Offices. She earned her undergraduate degree, with honors, from Middlebury College, and an M.B.A. from Marquette University, with an emphasis in Private Equity Finance and Entrepreneurship. Dr. Rosplock has her Ph.d. in Organizational Systems from Saybrook Graduate School. Dr. Rosplock's research includes the Women & Wealth Study (2006), Men & Wealth Study (2007), the Alignment Study (2008), and the ongoing, Sustaining the Family Enterprise Study. She is the editor of A Family’s Guide to Wealth: Insights from Thought Leaders and Pioneers (2009) and has published in Family Business Magazine and the Journal of Wealth Management, as well as has a number of white papers published through GenSpring Family Offices. Juan Roure: IESE Business School - Spain
Dr. Juan Roure is Professor of Entrepreneurship at IESE Business School. He has been a Visiting Professor at the Graduate School of Business at Stanford, INSEAD, Harvard Business School, and CEIBS (China). He has a graduate degree in Industrial Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC), M.B.A. from ESADE, and Ph.d. from the University of Stanford. He has recently published “The Cycle of the Private Equity in Europe.” He is a founder-member of the IESE Forum of Private Investors and Family Offices. Dr. Roure is the coauthor of “Good Governance of Family Business”, published by the Instituto de la Empresa Familiar. In addition he is Co-Founder and member of the Board of the Association ‘Europe’s 500: Entrepreneurs for Growth’ and has collaborated with the European Venture Capital Association (EVCA) during last the 10 years. In 2000, he was selected by Time magazine as one of the 25 ‘Most Influential People on the European Technology scene’.

Allison Pearson: Mississippi State University Allison Pearson is the W.L. Giles Distinguished Professor of Management at Mississippi State University, Starkville, Mississippi. She received her Ph.d. in Organizational Behavior from Auburn University. Dr. Pearson utilizes her background in organizational behavior to research team dynamics in organizations, including family firms. Her research has been published in Journal of Applied Psychology, Journal of Management, Decision Sciences, Entrepreneurship Theory & Practice, Journal of Business Venturing, Journal of Business Research, Family Business Review, and has been featured in Worth Magazine and the NBC Today Show. She is an Associate Editor for Family Business Review and serves on the Editorial Board of four journals. Dr. Pearson is the Richard C. Adkerson Notable Scholar and a John Grisham Master Teacher at Mississippi State University. Börje Boers: Jönköping International Business School - Sweden Börje Boers received a Bachelor and a Master of Science in Economics and Business Studies from Växjö University, Sweden, in 2003. He holds also a Master of International Business Administration and a Diplom-Betriebswirt from Hamburg University of Economics and Politics, Germany. Before becoming a Ph.d. Candidate at JIBS Börje worked as authorized officer and head of personnel and administration at his family’s business (10 employees) in the service industry. He is still an advisor to the firm. Moreover, he worked several years in the German insurance industry. His previous research combined his interest in small and medium sized enterprises with organizational learning. He conducted a research project together with Associate Professor Mattias Nordqvist focused on family businesses on the stock-exchange. His dissertation research deals with organizational identity in family controlled media firms. His current research interests are organizational and hybrid identity as well as heterogeneity of family firms. Mattias Nordqvist: Jönköping International Business School - Sweden Mattias Nordqvist is the Hamrin International Professor of Family Business and Co-Director of CeFEO and on the faculty of Department of Entrepreneurship, Strategy, Organization and Leadership (ESOL). He also serves as the Associate Dean for Doctoral Programs at Jönköping International Business School (JIBS). Dr. Nordqvist is on the board of the International Family Enterprise Research Academy (IFERA) and on the scientific committee of the Center for Young and Family Enterprise (Cyfe) of the University of Bergamo, Italy. He has been selected twice (2011 and 2007) as a Family Owned Business Institute Research Scholar and serves as an external Research Fellow at the Family Business Center, University of St Gallen, Switzerland. Mattias is also a founding associate editor of the Journal of Family Business Strategy, and serves on the editorial board of the Family Business Review and Enterpreneurship Theory and Practice. Richard Gottschall: Concordia University Richard Gottschall is a doctoral candidate researching entrepreneurial family firms at the John Molson School of Business, Concordia University, Montreal. His doctoral thesis focuses on the impact of family human capital on innovation by family firms. The theoretical framework of this thesis was presented at the 2010 FERC meetings and the 2010 AoM conference. He is currently a faculty member at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh and has worked as an entrepreneur, for the New York State Small Business Development Centers and with the United States Agency for International Development. Alexandra Dawson: Concordia University Dr. Alexandra Dawson is an Assistant Professor at Concordia University’s John Molson School of Business. She received her Ph.d. in Management from Bocconi University, Milan (Italy) in 2007, with a dissertation on the private equity investment process in family firms. Prior to her academic career, Dr. Dawson obtained an M.Sc. in Industrial Relations and Human Resources Management (1994) from the London School of Economics (UK) and was a manager with a strategy consulting firm in London (UK), providing investment advice to private equity firms (1995-2001).
