Researchers from the various disciplines in business have emphasized the importance of functional area interfaces or integration on a firms competitive position and performance. No other disciplinary area has taken this proposition more seriously than the operations management (OM) area. Researchers in the OM area have argued and sometimes demonstrated that the integration of decisions between marketing and operations/manufacturing can have a significant impact on an organizations ability to achieve competitive advantage. The research proposed here seeks to examine how the direct and integration effects of human resource management, manufacturing, and marketing strategies on competitive strategy and firm performance differs between family firms and nonfamily firms in an emerging economy. Specifically, using existing theories and findings from current empirical research, our study will use data from Ghana, a Sub-Saharan African emerging economy.
