Callings of the Farm: Case Studies of Successors and their Children in New Zealand
Patricia Frishkoff, Paul Frishkoff
2004
This study will examine multi-generational family farms in New Zealand, seeking to identify non-economic factors that encourage successors to remain on or return to the farm. Interviews, conducted with a farm successor and one of his or her school-aged children, will focus on stories and artifacts. The project objectives are:
- To explore non-economic (soft-side) reasons behind succession, specifically by examining stories and artifacts
- To seek sources of strong, positive feelings that account for continuation of farming from the perspective of succeeding generation farmers
- To learn what those successors are teaching their children, by asking both the successors and the youth
