FOBI Has a New Director

Joseph J. Horak, Ph.D. has been an adjunct faculty member at Seidman College of Business since 2007 where he has taught a class in family business.  Joe has also taught graduate level courses on Family Theory at Wayne State University and Western Michigan University.

Joe coached a GVSU team of students at the same International Family Business Case Competition.   Out of 19 teams from 10 countries, in both the graduate and undergraduate division, our students won the award as the Most Creative and Innovative Team.  Also our captain, Jacob Czarniecki, won the award as Best Presenter in our division.

Joe’s doctorate is in Counseling and Leadership, from the Counselor Education and Counseling Psychology Department at WMU, which also awarded him their Outstanding Alumnus Award in 2011.    In 2003, in recognition of his clinical expertise, scholarship and contributions to the profession, Joe received the Professional Practice Award from the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy.   This is the highest honor a family therapist can receive and this award has been only granted three times since the association began in 1942.

Twice Governor John Engler appointed Joe to the Licensing Board for Marriage and Family Therapy and Governor Rick Snyder has appointed him to the Licensing Board for Psychology.  He is a Past President of the Michigan Association for Marriage and Family Therapy and previously was the Senior Director of Leadership Development and Family Business Consultation at DWH, a consulting firm in Grand Rapids.

Joe is a licensed psychologist and licensed marriage and family therapist.  He consults to family owned businesses and also provides leadership assessment and coaching.
