The Family Owned Business Institute's mission is to promote, preserve, influence, and impact family businesses through quality academic research, curriculum, and information services. The mission is made possible through the collaborations of The Family Owned Business Institute, The Center for Entreprenurship & Innovation, and The Family Business Alliance.

The Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation (CEI) in the Seidman College of Business at Grand Valley State University serves to champion and catalyze the vocation of entrepreneurship. To accomplish this mission, the CEI practices two objectives: talent development and the support for businesses. CEI serves as the paternal organization for the Family Owned Business Institute. The Family Owned Business Institute relies on the resources of CEI to provide family business owners with relevant information on current market trends, competition, and educational opportunities pertaining to succession and regeneration issues within family owned businesses.

The Family Business Alliance (FBA) is a unique model of cross-sector cooperation that draws the best from research, expertise, practice, and service delivery for the benefit of family-owned businesses located in West Michigan. FBA focus is to help family-owned businesses succeed generation to generation. FBA serves as the sister organization for the Family Owned Business Institute. The Family Owned Business Institute relies on the resources of FBA to provide family business owners with relevant events, workshops, specialized assistance, and peer groups to encourage dialogue and provide networking opportuntuties for family business owners.
