Incoming Student Scholarships

Freshman Scholarships - Entering Fall 2014 or prior

Consideration for scholarships are based on a complete admissions application submitted by December 31 for fall admission. 


Presidential Scholarship (Michigan and Non-Michigan Resident)*
Award amount:  $3,000 to $7,000 (renewable up to a total of four years)

  • Must have a 3.8 high school grade point average and 32 composite ACT score (or 1420 SAT combined score on the critical reading and math for non-Michigan Resident)
  • Awardees also receive an Award for Excellence Scholarship
  • Additional amounts of up to $2,000 are awarded to students who are National Merit Finalists
  • Must maintain 3.5 grade point average and Satisfactory Academic Progress at Grand Valley
  • Requires full-time enrollment
  • Total award value:  $12,000 to $28,000

Faculty Scholarship (Michigan and Non-Michigan Resident)*
Award amount:  $500 to $3,000 (renewable up to a total of four years)

  • Must have a 3.6 high school grade point average and 29 composite ACT score (or 1300 SAT combined score on the critical reading and math for non-Michigan Resident)
  • Awardees also receive an Award for Excellence Scholarship
  • Additional amounts of up to $2,000 are awarded to students who are National Merit Finalists
  • Must maintain 3.5 grade point average and Satisfactory Academic Progress at Grand Valley
  • Requires full-time enrollment
  • Total award value:  $2,000 to $12,000

Award for Excellence Scholarship (Michigan Resident)
Award amount:  $1,500 (renewable up to a total of four years)

  • Must have a 3.5 high school grade point average and 26 composite ACT score 
  • Must be a graduate of a Michigan high school
  • Must maintain 3.25 grade point average and Satisfactory Academic Progress at Grand Valley
  • Requires full-time enrollment
  • Total award value:  $6,000

Award for Excellence Scholarship (Non-Michigan Resident)
Award amount:  $5,800 approximately (renewable up to a total of four years)

  • Covers the difference between full-time Michigan resident tuition and non-resident tuition plus an additional $1,500 per year
  • Must have a 3.5 high school grade point average and 26 composite ACT score or an 1190 SAT combined score on the critical reading and math
  • Must maintain 3.25 grade point average and Satisfactory Academic Progress at Grand Valley
  • Requires full-time enrollment
  • Total award value:  $23,200 approximately

Laker Scholarship (Michigan and Non-Michigan Resident)
Award amount:  $1,000 (renewable up to a total of four years)

  • Must have a 3.5 high school grade point average and an ACT score of 23, 24 or 25 (Michigan residents)
  • Must have a 3.5 high school grade point average and an SAT scores between 1070 and 1150 combined score on the critical reading and math (Non-Michigan residents)
  • Must maintain 2.85 grade point average and Satisfactory Academic Progress at Grand Valley
  • Requires full-time enrollment
  • Total award value:  $4,000

Urban Schools Scholarship (Michigan and Non-Michigan Resident)
Award amount:  $3,000 (renewable up to a total of four years)

  • Awarded at application review specifically to students from select urban high schools. 
  • Select schools from the following areas are included:
    • Grand Rapids Public Schools
    • Detroit Public Schools
    • Additional Michigan High Schools:  Arthur Hill, Detroit High School of Fine and Performing Arts, Detroit University Prep Academy, John Pershing, JW Sexton, Northwestern, Pontiac Central, Pontiac Northern, Southfield Lathrup, Southfield Senior High, and Western International
    • Non-Michigan High Schools:  Chicago High School Agricultural, Curie, Gwendolyn Brooks, Hillcrest, Hyde Park Academy, John Hope College Preparatory, Jones College Prep, Kenwood Academy, Lane Tech, Morgan Park, Percy Julian, Proviso East, Proviso West, Thornridge. Thornwood and Whitney Young 
  • Michigan residents must have a 3.3 high school grade point average and a 21 ACT composite score
  • Non-Michigan residents must have a 3.3 high school grade point average and 21 ACT composite or score a 990 on the  SAT based on the critical reading and math
  • Cannot be combined with the Early Awareness Scholarship or a Native American Tuition Grant
  • Must maintain 2.5 grade point average and Satisfactory Academic Progress at Grand Valley
  • Requires full-time enrollment 
  • Students receiving this scholarship are also encouraged to participate in one of the structured student success programs on campus
  • Total award value:  $12,000

Early Awareness Scholarship (Michigan and Non-Michigan Resident)
Award amount:  $3,000 (renewable up to a total of four years)

  • Recipients of this scholarship will have at least two years of participation in one of the following programs:
    • The Detroit Compact
    • Wade H. McCree, Jr. Incentive Scholarship
    • Introspect Youth Services, Inc.
    • Ada S. McKinley Community Services, Inc.
    • TRiO Upward Bound
    • TRiO Talent Search
    • GEAR UP
  • Must have a 3.3 high school grade point average and a 21 ACT composite score
  • Non-residents of Michigan may also qualify with a 990 on the SAT on the critical math and combined science score
  • Cannot be combined with the Urban Schools Scholarship or a Native American Tuition Grant
  • Must maintain 2.5 grade point average and Satisfactory Academic Progress at Grand Valley
  • Requires full-time enrollment 
  • Students receiving this scholarship are also encouraged to participate in one of the structured student success programs on campus
  • Total award value:  $12,000

Alumni Heritage Scholarship
Award amount:  $500 (non-renewable)

  • Must be the child of a Grand Valley alumni entering as a freshman
  • Must have a 3.3 high school grade point average, a 22 composite ACT score or 1030 SAT score, and must not be receiving an Award of Excellence, Faculty, Presidential or Laker Scholarship
  • Requires full-time enrollment
  • Total award value:  $500

Robert C. Trotter Tri-County Scholarship
Award amount:  $500 (non-renewable)

  • Each high school in the counties of Kent, Muskegon, and Ottawa is allotted two $500 scholarships to Grand Valley to award to students of their own choosing
  • Must have a 3.2 high school grade point average, a 22 composite ACT score or 1030 SAT score, and must not be receiving an Award of Excellence, Faculty, Presidential or Laker Scholarship
  • Requires full-time enrollment
  • Entering freshman who wish to be considered should contact the counseling office in their high school
  • Total award value:  $500

Additional Requirements

  • A complete admissions application submitted by December 31 for fall admission which consists of the following:
  • Official transcripts
  • Results of the ACT or SAT test
  • $30.00 application fee
  • Admissions application submitted either online or by paper
  • Grand Valley must be the first institution attended following high school graduation
  • For renewable scholarships students must be enrolled full-time, eight consecutive fall/winter semesters, and meet the Financial Aid Satisfactory Academic Progress Standards

 *Must participate in a scholarship competition to be eligible
