Incoming Merit Scholarships


Transfer Scholarships - Entering Fall 2014 or prior

Consideration for scholarships are based on a complete admissions application submitted by December 31 for fall admission.

Award for Excellence Transfer Scholarship
Award amount: $1,500 (renewable up to a total of two years)

  • Must have attended an accredited community college in Michigan and completed 30 college credit hours at the time of application review
  • Must have earned a collegiate grade point average of 3.5 or greater
  • Must maintain 3.25 grade point average and Satisfactory Academic Progress at Grand Valley
  • Requires full-time enrollment
  • Total award value: $3,000

Transfer Student Urban Schools Scholarship
Award amount: $3,000 (renewable up to a total of two years)

  • Awarded at application review specifically to students from select urban high schools.
  • Select schools from the following areas are included:
    • Grand Rapids Public Schools
    • Detroit Public Schools
    • Additional Michigan High Schools: Arthur Hill, Detroit High School of Fine and Performing Arts, Detroit University Prep Academy, John Pershing, JW Sexton, Northwestern, Pontiac Central, Pontiac Northern, Southfield Lathrup, Southfield Senior High, and Western International
    • Non-Michigan High Schools: Chicago High School Agricultural, Curie, Gwendolyn Brooks, Hillcrest, Hyde Park Academy, John Hope College Preparatory, Jones College Prep, Kenwood Academy, Lane Tech, Morgan Park, Percy Julian, Proviso East, Proviso West, Thornridge, Thornwood and Whitney Young
  • Must have a 3.0 cumulative community college grade point average and completed 30 college credit hours at the time of application review
  • Cannot be combined with the Transfer Student Early Awareness Scholarship or a Native American Tuition Grant
  • Must maintain 2.5 grade point average and Satisfactory Academic Progress at Grand Valley
  • Requires full-time enrollment
  • Students receiving this scholarship are also encouraged to participate in one of the structured student success programs on campus
  • Total award value: $6,000

Transfer Student Early Awareness Scholarship
Award amount: $3,000 (renewable up to a total of two years)

  • Recipients of this scholarship will have at least two years of participation in one of the following programs:
    • The Detroit Compact
    • Wade H. McCree, Jr. Incentive Scholarship
    • Introspect Youth Services, Inc.
    • Ada S. McKinley Community Services, Inc.
    • TRiO Upward Bound
    • TRiO Talent Search
    • GEAR UP
  • Must have a 3.0 cumulative community college grade point average and completed 30 college credit hours at the time of review
  • Cannot be combined with the Transfer Student Urban Schools Scholarship or a Native American Tuition Grant
  • Must maintain 2.5 grade point average and Satisfactory Academic Progress at Grand Valley
  • Requires full-time enrollment
  • Students receiving this scholarship are also encouraged to participate in one of the structured student success programs on campus
  • Total award value: $6,000

Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship
Award amount: up to $1,200 (renewable up to a total of two years)

  • Recognizes the outstanding members of the Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Honor Society at Michigan community colleges
  • Must have a total cumulative college grade point average of 3.5 or higher and be a member of the PTK Honor Society
  • Must be a graduate of an accredited community college in Michigan and have earned an associate's degree
  • Must be admitted to GVSU as a new, full-time student for fall enrollment
  • Must maintain 3.5 grade point average at Grand Valley and complete 25 Grand Valley credits to renew the scholarship
  • Requires full-time enrollment
  • Must complete a separate application to be considered

Distinguished Community College Graduate Scholarship
Award amount: $2,000 (renewable up to a total of two years)

  • Must be a graduate of an accredited community college in Michigan and have earned an associate's degree
  • Must have a cumulative college grade point average of 3.5 or higher
  • Midyear transfers can be considered for the following fall semester
  • Grand Valley must be the first institution attended after the student has earned an associate's degree
  • Must maintain a 3.25 or better grade point average and Satisfactory Academic Progress at Grand Valley
  • Requires full-time enrollment
  • Selection of recipients is made by the presidents of the following two-year colleges: Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo Valley, Kellogg, Lake Michigan, Lansing, Montcalm, Muskegon, North Central Michigan, Northwestern Michigan, and West Shore
  • Replaces other merit scholarships such as the Award for Excellence
  • Total award value: $4,000

Additional Requirements

  • A complete admissions application submitted by December 31 for fall admission which consists of the following:
  • Official transcripts
  • Results of the ACT or SAT test
  • $30.00 application fee
  • Admissions application submitted either online or by paper
  • Must be enrolled full-time, four consecutive fall/winter semesters, and meet the Financial Aid Satisfactory Academic Progress Standards
