General Facility Rules

Below are our general Facility Rules. Please adhere to the Posted Signage in our Work Out Areas for information specific to the particular locations.

Fieldhouse & Rec Center Complex

 

GENERAL FACILITY GUIDELINES:

  1. The GVSU Fieldhouse/Recreation Center is a monitored facility. No access to facilities is granted without checking in at the Front Desk and presenting valid identification (A student ID , Faculty ID, or Membership ID).
  2. Users may not enter the facility under the influence of alcohol or controlled substances.
  3. Appropriate attire is required. This includes non-marking clean shoes. Shirts and workout gear is required. Swimwear is restricted to the locker rooms and swimming pool areas.
  4. Book bags and personal items are your responsibility. Please secure in a locker or cubby, provided at the facility. Do not bring valuable items into the facility.
  5. Any display of poor conduct, abusive language, fighting, or willful destruction of University property may result in loss of facility use privileges. If appropriate, other actions will be taken including disciplinary and legal action.
  6. Participants utilize all facilities "at your own risk".
  7. Parents, legal guardians, or a responsible person 16 and over must accompany youths under 14 years of age.
  8. Animals are prohibited, unless assisting others or in special circumstances approved by an authorized person.
  9. Smoking and tobacco substances are prohibited.
  10. Foods and beverages are permitted only in areas designated. They are not permitted in most activity areas. Exceptions would include bottled water.
  11. Any posting of materials must be approved by a facility authority.
  12. Bicycles, rollerblades, and skateboards are prohibited.
  13. Weapons of all types are prohibited.
  14. The Fieldhouse Recreation Center incorporates the entire Student Code of GVSU into its rules. All county, state, and federal laws currently in effect will apply as needed.
  15. The staff reserves the right to interpret and enforce policies and procedures in its best interests. Such interpretation will not likely be in writing.
  16. All personal trainers must be employed by Campus Recreation. GVSU Campus Recreation holds the exclusive right to all personal training in the facility. Any personal trainers not employed by GVSU Campus Recreation are not permitted to train clients in our facility. If we suspect that you are training clients in our facility you may be asked to leave or have your Recreation Center privileges revoked or suspended

FREE WEIGHT ROOM GUIDELINES

  1. Participation is at your own risk
  2. Talk with your physician before starting or significantly increasing your exercise program
  3. If you feel faint, dizzy, or experience chest pain or pressure, stop activity, and seek assistance from staff
  4. Participants must be at least 14 years old
  5. Use lock and collars on all bars
  6. Do not wear weight belts if they contact equipment upholstery
  7. Return dumbbells to the rack in their proper order
  8. Wear proper exercise attire, particularly shirts and athletic shoes, at all times
  9. Do not drop weight plates or dumbbells
  10. Perform squatting types of exercise with the squat rack only
  11. Use a spotter at all times
  12. Guard personal belongings, as GVSU is not responsible for any stolen or lost belongings. Lockers are available on the lower level
  13. Use of chalk and powder is prohibited
  14. Equipment must be thoroughly cleaned after each use
  15. Do not take equipment out of the room
  16. The on-duty supervisors have authority over all selectorized area conduct and use of equipment, and may expel a user from the facility for failure to follow instructions
  17. There is an increased risk of injury in the weight lifting center. In the event  of an emergency, please contact staff

CARDIO ROOM GUIDELINES

  1. Participation is at your own risk
  2. Talk with your physicians before starting or significantly increasing your exercise program
  3. If you experience any dizziness, faintness, or experience chest pain or pressure, immediately stop activity. Seek assistance from staff or the control desk area
  4. Participants must be at least 14 years old
  5. Wear proper exercise attire, particularly shirts and athletic shoes, at all times
  6. Please adhere to posted time limits for usage of equipment
  7. Guard personal belongings, as GVSU is not responsible for any articles lost or stolen. Lockers are available on the lower level
  8. Equipment must be thoroughly cleaned after each use
  9. The on-duty supervisors have authority over all fitness area conduct and use of equipment, and may expel a user from the facility for failure to follow instructions
  10. In the event of an emergency, please contact staff

SELECTORIZED WEIGHT ROOM GUIDELINES

  1. Participation is at your own risk
  2. Talk with your physicians before starting or significantly increasing your exercise program
  3. If you feel faint, dizzy, or experience chest pain or pressure, stop activity, and seek assistance from staff
  4. Participants must be at least 14 years old
  5. Wear proper exercise attire, particularly shirts and athletic shoes, at all times
  6. Guard personal belongings, as GVSU is not responsible for any articles lost or stolen. Lockers are available on the lower level
  7. Use lockers for storing personal belongings – no bags are permitted into the weight area
  8. Please read and abide by instructions and precautions posted on each piece of equipment
  9. Equipment must be thoroughly cleaned after each use
  10. Do not take equipment out of the room
  11. The on-duty supervisors have authority over all selectorized area conduct and use of equipment, and may expel a user from the facility for failure to follow instructions
  12. In the event of an emergency, please contact staff

RECREATION CENTER COURT GUIDELINES (Basketball Courts)

  1. No offensive language including profanity and obtrusive loudness
  2. No dunking or hanging on the rim of the basketball hoops (exceptions include supervised intramural play, and intercollegiate athletic practices)
  3. No excessive rough play characterized by high physical contact and aggressiveness that blatantly amplifies the risk of injury of participants and/or spectators
  4. No kicking of basketballs or volleyballs
  5. No throwing basketballs or volleyballs against walls
  6. No fighting, or verbal altercations will be tolerated 

POOL GUIDELINES

  1. All users must be scanned in to verify eligibility of pool use at the check in station
  2. All participants must shower before entering into the pool
  3. All participants under the age of 12 must be supervised by an adult
  4. All participants using the 3-M diving board must be at least 16 years old
  5. No running, rough play, or excessive noise in the pool, on the pool deck, or in the locker rooms
  6. No food or drink allowed onto the poll deck (bottled water is allowed)
  7. No pets allowed into the facility. Service dogs excluded see Rule 20
  8. No SCUBA or snorkeling equipment allowed without prior approval by Management
  9. Do not distract on duty Lifeguards from responsibilities to the patrons or the pool
  10. Do not participate in any “breath holding” games
  11. Do not swim if you have communicable or infectious diseases
  12. Do not hang from the rim or net of the basketball hoop
  13. Do not hang from the lane lines
  14. Obey the Lifeguards at all times
  15. Lifeguards have the right to limit or regulate: a) activities, b) equipment use, c) facility use
  16. Diving is allowed only in designated area
  17. Floatation devices must attach to the child and be approved by Lifeguard
  18. Swimming equipment must stay in the shallow end of the pool
  19. There must be two Lifeguards present at all times for the facility to be in use by the public
  20. Individuals with a disability requiring an accommodation are asked to please see a lifeguard prior to swimming so they are aware of the current situation
  21. Guests are responsible for their own towels. If needed, please visit the Rec Center front desk to rent one out
  22. Proper swimming attire is required (no pants, shorts, under garments, t-shirts, or cut offs)
  23. Swim diapers or plastic pants are required of all children who wear diapers
  24. Starting blocks are for the Varsity Swimming and Diving teams only
  25. The use of alcohol, drugs or tobacco is prohibited within the pool facility
  26. GVSU’s student code with be adhered to at all times
  27. GVSU Athletic and Recreation Facilities management takes no responsibility for lost, stolen, or damaged items from locker rooms or the pool deck
  28. GVSU takes no responsibility of personal injury sustained while swimming in the pool
