The Learn 2 Earn series was developed to provide all students across disciplines at GVSU with the necessary skills to produce high-quality scholarship/fellowship applications. These workshops aim to equip students with the knowledge, skills and resources to develop themselves and gain information that can be used even beyond their time completing applications. We recognize that submitting a nationally-competitive award application may be a daunting process. The Learn 2 Earn series is tailored to provide students with support to make this process less intimidating. We hope our workshops will bring students to a level of preparedness where students feel ready and confident to begin the application process for any number of opportunities within our office.

To kick off the Winter 2017 semester, we’re getting back to basics. What are Fellowships and where can I find them? How do I know if I am eligible to apply for these opportunities? Where can I get answers and receive help with my applications? Why should I apply? These are just a few of the questions we will explore in this interactive workshop aimed at helping you discover and navigate the world of Fellowships. This is your chance to get all of your Fellowships-related questions answered. Already familiar with what Fellowships are? No worries - we still encourage you to attend! There is always more to learn and discover, especially as we’ll be discussing the expert tips for using online databases to search awards. All students - no matter your grade level, major, interests, background or GPA - are encouraged to attend!
Who, what, where, when and why do I need to know about personal statements? In almost every scholarship or fellowship application (not to mention graduate school applications or other opportunities!) you will need to craft a personal statement. This is a unique type of essay that may differ from a traditional response paper. The personal statement is your chance to shine. Show your audience who you are and what your individual story is! This interactive workshop will guide students through all the do's and don't's of crafting your personal statement, all the best strategies for writing structure, revision, editing, and staying under word limits! Even if you have written personal statements in the past, join us for this chance to be refreshed on the art of personal statement writing. All students are encouraged to attend!
Your social media messages may be on fleek, but when it comes to professional communications, you'll want to put aside the memes and get your professional language ready to be top notch! Asking for letters of recommendation for national awards may be a daunting task, but you'll be confident in no time once you learn the best practices for doing this. What about proper email etiquette, how to network among professionals, how to find mentors or simply how to make yourself stand out in the professional world? No worries! You have questions, and we have answers. This interactive workshop will share best practices for all-things-professional, making the adult life something you can totally handle. Skills learned will enhance your ability to not only complete quality award applications, but also will prepare you for a future of success. All students are encouraged to attend, no matter what your professional goals may be.
The final workshop for the Winter 2017 Learn 2 Earn series will give students an inside look into the experiences of real GVSU students who have successfully received nationally-competitive awards. These students have set the bar high for all other students considering applying for awards! We are so proud of our students' success and love celebrating their paths to achievement. This workshop will include 5-6 student award recipients who will serve on a Q&A panel. We'll have questions planned, but encourage all attendees to bring your own personal questions! The panelists will be happy to answer them, as well as share their stories and experiences navigating the application process and awaiting the notification. All students - whether you are in the process of applying for awards or not - are encouraged to attend!
