2008 Annual Family Business Forum: The Next Generation—the future of family business is in their hands... This forum is a perfect way to initiate or support inter-generational teamwork; a "can’t miss" event for all generations within a family business, spouses, and non-family managers and directors . Research warns us that in the next 10 years, two of every five business owners expect to retire. Will the next generation be "willing" and "able" to take up the mantle? What can be done to equip the next generation? What can be done to engage the next generation? Dr. Joe Astrachan (pictured here) will give us a framework to explore these questions, followed by five breakout sessions guided by "current" and "next" generation family business leaders and experts. A lunchtime presentation on Inter-Generational Teamwork caps our discussion of this important issue. More About Dr. Astrachan: Joe, who comes from a family business background, is a world renowned family business educator, speaker and author of articles and books, including Making Sibling Teams Work: The Next Generation. In addition to his work in academia and in the community, Joe serves on the boards of five privately -owned family businesses ranging in sales from $70 Million to $1.5 Billion. He has received many accolades, including the International Family Business Program Association’s Lifetime Achievement in Research Award. A frequent visitor to the Grand Rapids area, we welcome him back again. Breakout Sessions: Participants may register for up to two. A. Engaging the Next Generation: Children who grow up in a family that owns a business have different experiences than other children. How do we engage and energize the next generation to take on future leadership in the family business? B. Equipping the Next Generation: What do members of the next generation need to succeed? What resources are available? C. Telling Your Family Business Story – Keeping the Flame Alive: Sharing family stories can build family unity. Each family business has a series of stories that are told to pass on vision and values, initiate newcomers, and remember those who have gone before. Participants will hear a family business story and take the first steps to capture the own. D. Hiring Family - Preparing the Business for the Next Generation: Hiring anyone is fraught with challenges that are only intensified when the one being hired is family. Putting certain structures in place well beforehand and using the right tools can be helpful. E. Moving from Sole Owner to Shared Leadership – When Fair Isn’t Always Equal: How do we share wealth and opportunities for leadership with the next generation when that generation is made up of siblings, or cousins and perhaps their spouses? |
