Pew FTLC - Inclusive Excellence Teaching Institute

Description

Inclusive excellence refers to the use of pedagogical strategies that address the needs of students with a variety of backgrounds, learning interests, and abilities.  These strategies contribute to an overall inclusive learning environment, in which students feel equally valued.  In order to provide faculty with an opportunity to learn more about inclusive excellence in teaching and learning, the Pew FTLC offers the Inclusive Excellence Teaching Institute (IETI).

The IETI is offered in a 3-day intensive face-to-face format or virtually (online) over multiple weeks and fosters cultural humility in the classroom through examination of faculty social identity, exploration of barriers to learning for diverse student groups and introduction to  pedagogical approaches that promote an inclusive classroom environment.  Through pre-assigned readings and facilitated discussions, faculty begin the process of transforming their courses to reflect various aspects of inclusion.  Faculty who complete the workshop will be given access to a group blackboard site and continue to meet monthly throughout the subsequent semester to reconnect and discuss the progress made in transforming their courses.

Bronze Level Criteria

To earn a bronze badge, participate in the entire workshop and submit a written reflection about implementation of pedagogical practices learned during the workshop.  Review the detailed event schedule here.

Silver Level Criteria

To earn a silver badge, participate fully in the workshop and subsequent semester meetings, and submit a welcoming inclusive syllabus and a written reflection on how they have applied insights/materials garnered from participation in the Institute.

Gold Level Criteria

To earn a gold badge, complete the silver badge and then provide evidence of continued implementation or dissemination related to the Institute, either through a development of a new course, invited campus presentation, conference presentation or publication.  No deadline.

To earn a gold badge as an FLC facilitator, participate in a facilitator orientation session and submit a reflection about the experience of serving in this leadership capacity.  For those unable to attend a face-to-face session, submit an additional written reflection on the assigned orientation readings.
