Local Political Campaign InternshipKatherine
Experience Information
Employer: LaGrand Campaign for State Senate Description of the OrganizationDavid LaGrand Campaign for State Senate was a political campaign promoting Democrat David LaGrand for the 29th district in Kent County. Description of the Tasks/Projects CompletedAs an intern, I learned to do many tasks both inside and outside the office. I went door to door talking to people about the candidate, made phone calls to voters, planted yard signs, made copies and mailed letters. Some tasks were more interesting than others, but all of them were important. Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The ExperienceI learned more about the democratic process and became more confident in myself and talking about domestic policies with people who might not have the same political beliefs as I do. Favorite Part of the Experience1. Working with some amazingly driven, talented people at the office. 2. Having a conversation with someone, either on the phone or in person, who actually listens to what you are talking about and asks questions instead of shutting you out. It makes you feel like you accomplished something. How the Experience Influenced Future Career GoalsWhile I'm looking for a career on an international level, I was lucky to get to see how a local political campaign worked. I learned how much hard work goes into a campaign and now appreciate the role of volunteers and importance of being politically active. These characteristics don't change much from country to country. All opinions, conclusions or recommendations expressed are those of the author(s) and do not necessarily reflect the views of GVSU. |
