The NHA Experience

Experience Information

Employer: National Heritage Academies
Job Title: Government Relations Intern
Major: International Relations
Received Credit?: Yes
Paid?: Yes

Description of the Organization

National Heritage Academies (NHA) partners with local school boards to build and manage no-cost public charter schools. NHAs system of schools is designed to eliminate the achievement gap and provide a public school choice to families so that their children are prepared for success in high school, college, and beyond.

Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed

While I was at NHA, I performed many clerical duties such as mass mailings and organizing meetings and school visits with elected government officials. I also had the opportunity to partake on conference calls and create memos on recent legislative movements and prior state laws.

Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience

From this experiences, I gained the skills and knowledge of working in a large corporate office. This was my first time being in this setting, and although it was slightly nerve-wracking at first, I quickly adjusted and now would feel confident walking into any other corporation. Also, I was surprised to realize that I had never written a memo in any years of my education prior to this position, so learning how to extract important information and compile it into a brief but complete document was also a skill I learned while at NHA.

Favorite Part of the Experience

My favorite part of this co-op experience was interacting with my co-workers. Everyone at this organization is extremely friendly and helpful. From them, I have learned a great deal on how to operate in a larger work setting. They also helped me familiarization with the building as well as make me feel included as part of their team.

How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals

This experience will directly affect my upcoming career goals as I was extended a full time position in September. I was in no way expecting my degree to get me a position at a charter school organization, but after spending eight months at NHA, I am happy to say that I will begin my post-college career with the Government Relations department with a company that has such a bright and promising future.
