Interning with the Red Cross

Brianna

Experience Information

Employer: American Red Cross
Job Title: Intern with the Youth Services Department
Major: International Relations
Received Credit?: Yes
Paid?: No

Description of the Organization

The American Red Cross is an national and International Organization that is committed to helping community members who need it. There are various departments within a Red Cross chapter and each chapter has individuals who have been specially trained to help others in times of disaster--whether it be a house fire, flood, tornado, armed conflict, so on and so on.

Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed

I started volunteering back in February with the Disaster Relief department, though my internship this summer was with the Youth Services Department. During my internship I was responsible for putting together and organizing service projects that youth kids between the ages of 13-20 could partake in. Specifically, I helped to plan a park clean-up, a Youth Leadership Camp and a community flower basket project. In working on these projects I was also responsible for writing memos and press releases to various companies, organizations and stores to raise awareness of our projects.

Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience

I gained a lot from this internship. In particular I think I solidified my communication skills because I had to network so much between the Red Cross and organizations in the community. I also gained valuable computer skills because I spent a lot of time designing and placing information on the Youth Services Department. In addition, I think I became more confident as a leader because I was often sort of placed in the leadership position. I know that the skills and knowledge I gained through this internship is extremely valuable and will come in handy down the road.

Favorite Part of the Experience

My favorite part of this internship was the Youth Leadership Camp we hosted. It was fun because it was something different and it was not so formal. We got to have fun and listened to some great speakers.

How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals

This internship has only solidified what I want to do in my future career. It has reminded me that I do want to pursue a career that allows me to make a difference in the lives of people and it has motivated me to take a more proactive role in achieving these goals. I have started my research on potential places of employment and am getting very excited to discover that there are so many opportunities out there that I never could have even imagined.
