Employer: Sierra Club
Job Title: Campaign Intern
Major: Political Science
Received Credit: Yes

Description of the Organization

The Sierra Club is the largest nonprofit environmental organization in the United States. They advocate for environmental protection and protection of land, water and animals in affected areas of the United States. The Sierra club is nonpartisan but does endorse candidates who are environmental voters, they then deploy interns to endorsed campaigns all throughout the state.

Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed

While in the internship program with the Sierra Club I worked for a state representative running for reelection. During my time with her campaign I participated in phone banking events, canvassed doors with campaign literature, placed small and large yard signs in residents yards and answered any potential questions voters may have.

Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience

Through this experience I gained soft skills (i.e. phone calls and face to face conversations), as a naturally introverted person this was a tremendous skill to learn. I also gained data entry experience and a better geographic understanding of the greater Grand Rapids area.

Favorite Part of the Experience

My favorite part about this internship program was getting to work side by side with campaign volunteers and the candidate herself. It was a terrific experience to see everybody work towards a common goal.

How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals

This experience has given me an insight into the political arena, specifically field work of a campaign. Through my time on the campaign I have gained a better sense of where I belong on a campaign and what activities I feel I can contribute my skills best to.
