Description of the Organization

The Debbie for Senate campaign was focused on re-electing Senator Debbie Stabenow to the United States Senate to serve another six year term. We had branches and offices all throughout the state of Michigan. Various volunteers and interns and employees worked together to re-elect Debbie. I worked in the 3rd congressional district at the Democratic Party Headquarters on Michigan Street. The Debbie for Senate campaign collaborated with local, state, and national democratic officials to achieve its goal of re-electing the Senator.

Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed

I completed various tasks and projects. I recruited and managed volunteers for canvasses, press releases, rallies, and events. I recruited volunteers by calling individuals and past volunteers. I also phone banked and called voters to seek their support for Debbie. Moreover, I attended events with Senator Stabenow. Additionally, I translated for the Senator when she came to the Hispanic Festival and when she did press releases to the Spanish news media in Grand Rapids. I also helped my campaign manager cut turf for the volunteers that canvassed. Furthermore, I also helped collect and record campaign funds at events with the Senator. Also, I assisted other candidates such as Winnie Brinks with their campaigns. Finally, I served as a poll greeter on election day and helped translate for voters that were not fluent in English.

Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience

I gained oral communication skills. I was constantly on the phone for each day that I did this internship and it certainly helped to strengthen and improve my skills in that area. I gained computer knowledge skills. I had to use voter database systems and other database systems to cut turf for the volunteers. I also gained organizational skills that I had to employ while doing my work. I gained knowledge of local, state, and national politics from working directly with Debbie and helping other candidates with their campaigns. I also gained knowledge of fundraising.

Favorite Part of the Experience

My favorite part was being able to meet and spend time with Debbie and learn about politics. She is a very down-to-earth woman and a very powerful role model to all, especially young women interested in being involved in politics. I also enjoyed meeting and working with other local, state, and national officials such as State Representative Winnie Brinks and former President Bill Clinton to raise funds and recruit volunteers.

How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals

I want to get involved in domestic politics one day but I think this internship has influenced me to wait until later to get involved. Politics can be very stressful and I think it is best to gain real-world experience in business and whatnot before delving into the world of politics because that experience will make you a better-informed leader. I am also inspired to get into business after meeting so many successful business leaders in the Grand Rapids community.
