Job Title: Intern
Major: Sport Management

Description of the Organization

As one of the most successful Division 2 athletic programs, GVSU athletics strives to build the culture already in place. GVSU has made a name for themselves nationally as they have captured multiple national championships, President's Cups, and Director's Cups. In the next year, the Lakers will be adding Men's and Women's Wrestling to the athletics program. The Marketing and Fan Development branch of the athletics department is determined to create the best fan experience at our athletic events.

Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed

As a member of this crew, one of my main tasks was controlling the music on game days at Volleyball, Football, Soccer, and Men's and Women's Basketball. I was also responsible for setting up Softball's music for the year. Other tasks involved going to local businesses and handing out schedule cards to showcase what is happening on campus. As a part of the marketing team, we were in charge of carrying out in-game promotions, setting up sponsorship tables, and game-day activities for fans.

Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience

I gained more knowledge of what goes into game days and the time it takes to fully prepare for game days to make them run smoothly. I also have enhanced my communication skills as I was able to freely go and talk with multiple people within the athletic department. It is important to communicate with your peers to make sure everyone is on the same page.

Favorite Part of the Experience

I've had a couple favorite parts of this internship; however, my favorite by far was being a part of the biggest football game in Grand Valley State history against Ferris State on October 16. Despite the outcome, the fan engagement for this game was beyond amazing. I also enjoyed the connections I have made with other student athletes, coaches, and executives within the athletic department.

How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals

I knew I have always wanted to work in an athletic marketing setting, and this experience has definitely changed where I want to go with my degree. My goal is to work for a professional sports team in the marketing department, but I am also intrigued by the college level marketing and fan development side. I love working around collegiate athletes and making connections with students to make their college experience the best it can be.
