Solutions offered by Dematic include Automated Guided Vehicles, Automated Storage and Retrieval Systems, as well as sortation and conveying systems.

Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed

While working at Dematic I have completed a wide variety of tasks. I work on the Amazon Mechanical Engineering team which designs conveying and sortation systems for Amazon Fulfillment Centers. My day-to-day functions include making/updating drawings in AutoCAD, ordering miscellaneous parts to the job site, verifying that all necessary conveyor assemblies were ordered, assisting the manufacturing department, and update the standards document Engineers use when they have questions pertaining to products or system design.

Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience

During my first Co-op rotation I have learned many new programs that a Dematic Engineer uses every day. AutoCAD is used for both designing and installing the conveying systems. Other programs used include an inventory system for manufacturing and an order entry system that is used for managing equipment that is to be sent to site for installation. Besides learning new software, I have also learned how a large-scale company operates. With roughly 1,200 engineers being employed, teamwork and communication play a huge role in the success of the company. Mechanical, Controls, and Software Engineers often have to consult with another to verify how each group is designing the system.

Favorite Part of the Experience

Later in the month of August I will be traveling to an Amazon Fulfillment Center near San Antonio, TX. My mentor and I will be aiding the installation team with questions and problem they might have. We will also be making sure the conveyor is installed correctly. This is a great opportunity for me to travel to a place I have never been and to work with my hands, which is what ultimately pushed me to pursue engineering.

How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals

Now knowing that I really do enjoy the work of a Mechanical Engineer, I can't wait for my next Co-op rotation. Dematic is a great company to work for, full of people that will always be there to help with questions that may arise. Dematic has provided me with a first class experience and I hope to work for them after school. With the training I have received and will continue to receive over my next two Co-op rotations, I will be ready for what awaits me after graduation.
