Minor League Baseball Grounds Crew Intern

Experience Information

Employer: Tennessee Smokies
Job Title: Grounds Crew Intern
Major: Sport Management
Received Credit: Yes
Paid: Yes
Abroad: No

Description of the Organization

The Smokies have 6 executives that over see all operations of the ballpark. Anthony DeFeo reports to them and I report to Anthony. The organization has 36 full time employees with lots of game day staff.

Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed

Game days I am at the field for about 9 to 14 hours depending on the start of the game. I would either mow, clean and drag the infield, or do clay work in the morning. Set up batting practice, water the infield, fill in divots, other small things to pass the time. After that set up for the game and drag the infield at the end of the 3rd and 6th innings. After the game I patch up the clay areas that get used and do other general clean up.

Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience

I learned how to properly take care of the clay areas, when and when you cannot mow, and time management.

Favorite Part of the Experience

Just being at a baseball field everyday and being outside. Being around good people and have a great boss makes my experience that much better.

How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals

My future goals haven't changed from day 1 of the internship. But this experience has just made career goals look more achievable than I thought.
