District Congressional Intern

Experience Information

Employer: Congressman Bill Huizenga
Job Title: Intern
Major: Political Science
Received Credit: Yes
Paid: No
Abroad: No

Description of the Organization

I completed an internship with congress: 100 senators and 435 representatives form Congress. I worked for Representative Bill Huizenga. Each congressman has one D.C. office and at least one District office. I interned in the district office.

Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed

I worked on general administrative tasks, I read letters from constituents and assigned them to the correct staff member, I wrote letters to constituents, I helped with the district news update that was sent to all of Congressman Huizenga's staff, I helped with several cases for constituents dealing primary with Veteran Affairs and Immigration.

Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience

I received an inside look at how congress operates outside of legislation. When most people think of congress, they think of the legislative job rather than how Congress is to serve constituents. Working in the district office allowed me to see that other side.

Favorite Part of the Experience

My favorite part was the feeling of knowing I was doing good. Whenever we were successful at helping a constituent, it felt so good. Congress is often viewed negatively but I can say for a fact, they want to help their constituents and serve them as best they can.

How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals

Throughout my time in college, when people would ask me how I wanted to use my political science degree I would always say to work in some capacity within congress. This internship has solidified that. I cannot say enough good things about my experience. I am truly disappointed that my internship is over but it does give me something to work for in the future.
