Human Performance Lab

This 950 sq. ft. lab is used for 400-level teaching as well as faculty and student research, and athlete fitness and performance testing. In class, students are exposed to maximal and power testing, as well as hydrostatic weighing. This lab space is also used for faculty and student research projects.

The lab is equipped for extensive exercise testing with a ParvoMedics TrueOne 2400 metabolic cart, Woodway ELG treadmill, Monark 874e cycle ergometers, a Concept II row ergometer, a Monark 894e Wingate cycle ergometer, a Monark arm crank ergometer, a Vertec jump height device, a half squat rack, a Vitalograph spirometer, a wireless EMG system, and an AMTI portable force plate. We are able to assess body composition a number of different ways using an underwater weighing tank with load cell, bioelectrical impedance analysis, and Harpenden skinfold calipers.

We also have access to a number of hand-held and benchtop analyzers including an Atago pen refractometer, a YSI 1500 lactate analyzer, a Lactate Pro, and a CardioChek blood chemistry analyzer, as well as a fixed-arm centrifuge for preparation of whole blood samples. The lab is also equipped with a Squirrel SQ2020 data logger, ingested telemetry pills, rectal thermistors, Braun Thermoscan Pro 4000 ear thermometers, and skin thermistors for the measurement and recording of core body and skin temperature.
