Description:

The Regionalist art movement reflects a distinct period in U.S. history, including the efforts by artists to define a uniquely American style. This concentration on a specific geography and culture would emanate, in its purest form, from the American Midwest of Thomas Hart Benton, John Steuart Curry, and Grant Wood. Regionalism and the Art of the WPA includes works by these and other artists who drew their inspiration from their immediate surroundings, both rural and urban. In a collaborative endeavor between GVSU and the Muskegon Museum of Art, the Art Gallery will host this exhibition of more than 40 works drawn from the MMA’s collection. The collaboration is in conjunction with the MMA’s hosting of 1934: A New Deal for Artists, organized and circulated by the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, D.C., and scheduled in Muskegon for February 16 through May 6, 2012. A series of interdisciplinary programs are planned for students and the public at the GVSU Art Gallery, the Hauenstein Center for Presidential Studies, and the Muskegon Museum of Art.
