Description

ReACT! explores social issues through interactive theater

It’s a theater class that is as much about activism as it is about acting.

Students in ReACT! perform scenes to educate the campus community on the dangers of stalking, sexual assault and relationship violence. The three-credit theater course is taught by Alli Metz, assistant professor of theater education in the School of Communications.

ReACT! is a collaborative effort between the Women’s Center and School of Communications’ theater program. The program is funded by a grant from the federal Violence Against Women Act awarded to the Women’s Center.

Students in ReACT! gives about 10-15 performances each year. Metz said each performance is different and relies heavily on audience involvement.

“The audience members are called on to direct the scene,” Metz said. “So the actors will improvise with the direction given.”

To prepare for performances, ReACT! actors undergo training in diversity and interpersonal violence. Metz studied with Lynn Hoare, who runs the Voices Against Violence program in Texas, prior to joining Grand Valley’s faculty.
