Date and Time:

Monday, January 20, 2014
2:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Location:

  • Kirkhof Center » RM 2204 PERE MARQUETTE

Description:

As part of Martin Luther King Day, the GVSU Women's Center is partnering with Access of West Michigan to host two Poverty Simulation Workshops; one at 9:30 am and one at 2 pm. Please only RSVP for one workshop. Spaces are limited to 75 participants. This event is free of charge to all participants.

“The poverty simulation experience is designed to help participants begin to understand what it might be like to live in a typical low-income family trying to survive from week to week. It is a simulation, not a game. The object is to sensitize participants to the realities faced by low-income people.”

This interactive simulation provides participants with a family identity as they navigate a month living in poverty.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. I was able to explore the daily realities faced by low-income people. (integrative learning)
  2. I gained increased awareness about poverty in our local community. (knowledge & examination of structures and systems that impact diverse populations)
  3. I increased my understanding of ways I can take action and get involved with issues related to poverty, both on campus and in the community. (personal & social responsibility)
