In the United States April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM). The goal of SAAM is to raise public awareness about sexual violence and to educate communities on how to prevent it. Sexual violence is a major public health, human rights and social justice issue. And we need everyone’s help to end it. It’s On Us Lakers.
Sexual Assault Prevention, Risk Reduction, & Bystander Empowerment
“Edutainer” Robert Hackerson Jr. thoughtfully infuses magic, stories, and more to create educational lessons to address the prevalence of sexual assault and rape culture in his three-part program.
Part one: Men’s vital role in sexual assault prevention and the male culture that is filled with misperceptions and a “not my problem” mentality.
Part two: Discuss risk reduction techniques, including exploring the relationship between alcohol and sexual assault.
Part three: Empower bystanders with the 3 D’ techniques (Distract, Delegate, Disrupt) for bystanders to either directly or indirectly intervene during risky situations.
Every piece of magic, story, video clip, etc. is used to deliver a message and make it memorable, without making light of the seriousness of the issue. This program helps to start the conversation among the student body about alcohol and sexual assault and make them think not only about their own safety, but as a bystander, how and when to act for the safety of their peers.
