Students at Grand Valley State University will play Arctic games as part of a class project that highlights Saami and Inuit culture.\r\n
John Kilbourne, professor of movement science, will have students in his Honors College course present Inuit (eastern Arctic region of Canada) or Saami (Scandinavia) games and teach them to others. Live reindeer from G&G Reindeer Farm in Calendonia will be stationed in a closed area by the Cook Carillon Tower on the Allendale Campus.\r\n
Students from area K-12 schools, and Grand Valley students will watch and be able to participate in the games.\r\n
Participants will learn and be able to practice bone games, caribou jump, blanket toss, lassoing, board games and more. Hot chocolate and cookies will be provided.\r\n
Kilbourne’s course is a Honors Junior Seminar, “In Search of the Meaning of Games in Life: A Journey to the Circumpolar World.” His research involves Inuit culture; last year, his sabbatical study took Kilbourne to Norway for a semester.
