As part of Grand Valley State athletics Military Appreciation Day presented by J & H Oil Company on Sept. 21, 2013 WGVU Public Media and Uniform Color Company will host a Veterans Salute to honor those who have served or are currently serving in the five branches of the United States Military.
"WGVU and WGVU ENGAGE are proud to be a part of Military Appreciation Day," Michael T. Walenta, WGVU Public Media General Manager, commented. "We all know that Freedom isn't Free. To all of our military we continue to say THANK YOU!"
Prior to the football game versus Tiffin at 7:00 p.m., the WGVU Engage Veterans Salute presented by Uniform Color Company will run from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. in the Kelly Family Sports Center. This free event will feature military vehicles (past and present), and displays from all five service branches, including a tribute to 25 area Medal of Honor recipients.
In addition, there will be an area for Operation Forward Movement that will focus on services and resources for Veterans as well as an opportunity for the community to give back. The LZ Michigan Vietnam Big Map will be on display, courtesy of the Grand Rapids Public Museum. The Veterans Salute will have music, videos, and a kid’s area where they can meet all of the characters from the PBS Kids television show SUPER WHY, and the Sesame Street “ELMObility Room” will be on display presented by the American Legion Department of Michigan. Participants will also have a chance to make cards for the Veterans and personalized dog tags.
“Uniform Color Company, an Audia Group company, is committed to bringing veteran and reservist talent into our organization”, says Kim Miller, Director of Human Resources at Uniform Color Company. “This has truly become a win-win situation; the knowledge, skills, and abilities of the individuals we have hired are second to none. We are proud to support the Engage Veterans Salute, and we are looking forward to thanking the service members that have done so much for our country.”
The Lakers will honor our troops on the field by wearing special Adidas jerseys. The Adidas jerseys will represent our 5 branches of the military on the nameplate, with special tackle-twill digital camouflage numbers on the front and back.
"We are looking forward to this event to honor our Veterans and celebrate those who are currently serving in our military," said Associate Athletic Director for Marketing, Doug Lipinski. "We are planning several special events throughout the day as a way to say thank you to those who protect our freedoms."
Louie's Locker Room, GVSU's official team store, will also be selling exclusive camouflage hats and t-shirts for the event, with all proceeds going to support the WGVU LZ Michigan Scholarship Endowment. The WGVU LZ Michigan Scholarship Endowment is for Veterans and Veteran dependents to be able to further their education at Grand Valley State University. Grand Valley State University has been named “A Military Friendly School” by G.I. Jobs for the third consecutive year.
"J & H Family Stores is proud of the Veterans and active military that protect our communities." Craig Hoppen, President of J&H Oil Company and J&H Family Stores, added. "We are thrilled to be able to contribute to this memorable event to honor those who have risked their lives for ours".
