GVSU Music Department presents John Philip Sousa's "El Capitan." From the moment it premiered at Boston's Fremont Theatre on April 13, 1896, and through many years of turn-of-the-century headline performances in New York City and abroad, "El Capitan" quickly became an audience favorite of the March King, who excelled more than any other American composer at spirited tunes and beautiful melodies. GVSU will resurrect this long neglected, but never forgotten, gem of Sousa's compositional verse and excellence, an operetta that at one time was synonymous with American theater itself, in concert performance, conducted by Barry D. Martin.
