Carl Wilkens is the Director of World Outside My Shoes. He was the only American to stay in Rwanda during the 1994 genocide of the Tutsi people. Among many efforts, Mr. Wilkens used his connections to save 400 people from Gisimba Orphanage. In his book “I’m not Leaving” Mr. Wilkens talks about the events going on around him during the genocide. He will talk about the importance of standing up and not being just a bystander. Mr. Wilkens will also talk about the different factors that could cause people not react. Afterwards, there will be tables set up where the attendees can go and talk to different GVSU student organizations and find out how they can stand up and make a difference.
