Alternative Breaks is a service-learning student organization that sends affordable week-long volunteer trips to various cities throughout the United States during winter and spring break. The organization hosts monthly Service Saturdays that is open to any GVSU student interested in spending the day volunteering with a non-profit organization in Grand Rapids without any cost.
Alternative Breaks' first Service Saturday of 2012 will be held at the Land Conservancy of West Michigan. Volunteers will be working at the Lamberton Lake Preserve, helping prepare for a restoration project slated to begin this spring. Volunteers will be removing invasive buckthorn, clearing the property of brush and debris, and installing monitoring wells as time allows.
