8th Annual Art & Science of Aging Conference: The Age of Empowerment

The 8th Annual Art & Science of Aging Conference will be held on Friday, February 8. The conference theme is The Age of Empowerment, with workshops and sessions that emphasize individuals taking action on their own behalf. Featured speaker is Dr. Thomas Perls, M.D., M.P.H., Director of the New England Centenarian Project at Boston University. He is a world-renowned expert on the factors that contribute to exceptional longevity and has a website, livingto100.com, that draws from his work. Fifteen (15) workshops will be offered on topics such as Walking for Life, Food Matters, Scams and Fraud Prevention, Laughter, Dementia Caregiving, House and Home, Aging in Place, Sexuality, Advocacy, and Spiritual empowerment, and Advance Directives. The closing session focuses on Senior Odyssey of Michigan, a program that promotes creativity, brain exercise, friendship and friendly competition among teams. Presenters are GVSU Faculty and Community Experts. Students will present their research on aging topics in a poster format. The conference is open to the public. It is co-sponsored by GVSU Provost's Office, the College of Community and Public Service and the Geriatric Education Center of Michigan at MSU. Social Workers and Nurses can get continuing education units by attending.
