The Educational Support Program

Melissa Selby-Theut

Director

I am a native Detroiter, born and raised.  At seventeen, I ventured west and found myself in Chicago.  I enrolled at Concordia University and became the first in my family – my entire family! – to attend college.  I graduated in 2001 with a degree in teacher education and hopped the next train back to Detroit.  There, I landed a job as a high school English teacher.  Though I enjoyed teaching, I was troubled by the severity of the obstacles that my students faced.  I wanted to learn to help them overcome those obstacles so that they could better themselves, their families, and their communities.

After three years, I left teaching and ventured west again – this time to Grand Valley State University.  I earned my Master of Social Work degree here.  After working in a variety of capacities for a number of organizations, I landed right back at Grand Valley in 2006 as the Assistant Director, and later the Director, of the Educational Support Program.  I love ESP, and I love the students it serves.  I consider myself one of those lucky few who truly enjoy their jobs!

I have an incredible husband named Noah and a beautiful son named Milo!  As of late, the only hobby that I have time for is watching Milo grow in absolute awe, but that is perfectly fine with me.  I love spending time with my family and traveling anywhere and everywhere that I can.
