The Educational Support Program

Welcome to the Educational Support Program!

The Educational Support Program (ESP) is a federally-funded, comprehensive support program for first-generation and low-income college students.  The goal of the program is to do all that's possible to support participants in their quest to graduate from Grand Valley State University.  Participants are assigned an advisor and have access to peer mentors who can help them achieve success while in college.  We provide a number of services:

  • Academic advising
  • Scheduling assistance
  • Study skills assistance
  • Time management assistance
  • Secondary admission assistance
  • Financial aid counseling
  • Career counseling
  • Graduate school counseling
  • Personal counseling
  • Study abroad advising

ESP has a long history with GVSU and have found that students in ESP are more likely to graduate, and more likely to graduate in a timely manner, than students who are eligible to participate but chose not to.  In addition to the benefits listed above, ESP participants are also eligible to receive:

  • Grant money
  • Textbook loans
  • Laptop computer loans
  • Graphing calculator loans
  • Cultural enrichment trips to places like Chicago, Detroit, Traverse City and Detroit
