September 21, 2016

This meeting started at 6:05 p.m. and took place in the Seidman Forum. It was a company information session for Consumers Energy. Stephen Flores, a GVSU alum, was the presenter. He is a Tech Analyst for the Data Networks Engineering area at Consumers Energy.

Stephen kicked off the meeting with a company overview and some fast facts on Consumers Energy. Consumers Energy is the largest utility company. Stephen showed us a cool map of Consumers presence in the state of Michigan. Some of the company’s biggest values are safety and sustainability. Consumers is promoting “going green” in a few partnerships with Grand Valley like with the GV Solar Gardens and the Leadership Center which is currently being constructed on the Grand Valley Pew Campus. Stephen explained the internship program since he used to be an intern himself at Consumers Energy. Stephen mentioned the Intern Challenge which is a volunteering challenge that interns undertake every summer. Consumers has an Accelerated Technology Program which is a rotational Program for new hires. New hires are given 3 unique 12 month assignments to experience the different IT functions and see which area best suits them. They also have a formalized mentorship program. Stephen also talked about the SAP Journey and all the different modules that they use. Representatives from Consumers Energy will be back on campus on 10/10 for an Employee Spotlight and on 10/11 for the Fall Career Fair. The meeting ended at 6:40 p.m. ESSU would like to thank Stephen for his presentation.
