ESSU Discussion With Kumud Singh, An SAP Mentor - 04/06/2016

April 06, 2016

This meeting began at 6:00 p.m. in SCB 3001 on April 6, 2016. This meeting was a video chat with Kumud Singh who is an SAP Mentor. The topic of her presentation was transition from school to the corporate world and what being a female in the IT world entails.

Kumud gave us a third-person point of view story of a recent graduate trying to fit in the new work culture. A big part of that was the type of teams she worked with. Kumud described two project situations which seemed to be polar opposites.  One group was very transparent and the other consisted of her boss whom she didn’t get along with. She then asked for our response on the situation and she wanted to know which situation we would choose to work in and which one was the most challenging. She highlighted the importance of understanding the nature of an organization for students transitioning into their new work settings.

Kumud then asked what are motivators for women in the workforce and some of the students gave really good answers. The next question Kumud posed was to explain how moms in IT are different from normal people in IT. One of the biggest things that makes moms stand out is the fact that they are more trustworthy.  Kumud then told a story about focusing on work vs career.

Kumud ended the presentation by saying that designing our careers is important and that we must have emotional intelligence which is the idea we must communicate with others and get knowledge from others. We must share what you’ve learned and that can be done through feedback and comments.

We are very appreciative to have been able to connect with Kumud and thank her for taking time out of her busy schedule. This was a fun and interactive meeting and a great way to cap off the ESSU semester for events! The presentation ended at 6:35 p.m.
